Working Elsewhere - Part 3
Making It Work: Logistics, Gear, and Workflow
Working Elsewhere is a paid series on combining work, travel, and flexibility as a creative freelancer.
This series explores what it looks like to integrate work into travel — not as an escape or a productivity flex, but as a more intentional way of living and creating.
Through personal experience as a freelance photographer, I share the mindset shifts, practical systems, and honest tradeoffs that come with working elsewhere, along with the boundaries that make it sustainable.
Working while traveling isn’t just about having a laptop and a sense of adventure. It’s about designing systems and routines that actually have allowed me to get things done, creatively and professionally, while on the move. Flexibility and inspiration alone aren’t enough; without some intention + preparation, even the most ‘ideal’ lifestyle of combining work and travel can lead to burnout.
For me, every successful travel-work trip begins with planning. I make sure I know client deadlines and deliverables before I leave, so I can structure my travel days around editing, shoots, or meetings. Flights, accommodations, and local transportation are booked with my workflow in mind — like staying in a walkable part of the city, close to coffee shops + areas I want to explore/ be inspired by. I also prep files, backups, and gear long before departure, so nothing is left to chance while I’m on the move. For me, planning isn’t restrictive; it creates the freedom to focus on the creative work that truly matters.
But planning is only the beginning — the real difference is in the systems I’ve built behind the scenes.
